Gastfamilienbrief

Hey People!
Alice in Canada

Dear host family,
first of all I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to spend a half year in Canada with you and to be a part of your family. In the following letter I want to introduce myself and give you an impression of my personality, my family, my friends, my hobbies and the place where I live.My name is Alicia Henning and I’m a fifteen year old girl from Germany.
Me and my parents, Bernd (47) and Kristina (45), live in Wabern. It’s a village with about 7000 inhabitants and it’s in the middle of Germany. The geographical middle of Germany, Besse, is just 11 miles away.

My school is named König-Heinrich-Schule, has about 1000 students and is 5 miles away in a little city called Fritzlar. I just finished 9th grade of school and after the summer holidays I will be in the 11th grade. Because of a school system called “G8” there is no 10th grade at my school, so we have 9th and 10th all in once and leap the 10th grade. My favourite subjects in school are English, Economics and Maths. The subjects I don’t like those much are Chemistry and History. I drive to school with my mother every day because she’s a law enforcement officer in the district court of Fritzlar. My father is an administration secretary in Kassel.

We live in a house with a garden and I neither have siblings nor a pet. I’d like to have a dog or a cat but my mother has an animal hair allergy. My parents are very sporty and they do sports every second day. They like riding their bikes, swimming or going to the gym. Sometimes I accompany them but mostly I do sports on my own, with my friends or in school. I have a really good relationship to my parents and we don’t have arguments very often. Sometimes my mother has to remind me of doing the chore or tidying my room. Also sometimes me and my parents don’t have the same opinion but that’s all we argue about. We can have fun together but we can talk about serious things too.

On a typical weekday I wake up at 6:30am. Then I eat breakfast with my mother and get ready for school that starts at 7:50am. I have school till 3:30pm every day and after school I either drive home with the bus or stay in Fritzlar to meet friends or go to the gym. If I drive home, I have lunch and then I do my homework, watch TV or read. My mother gets home at about 4pm and my father at about 6pm. In the evening we have dinner and then we watch TV or play games together. I go to bed at 10pm.

On a typical day at the weekend I like to sleep long and then eat breakfast with my parents. After that I do my homework, learn for tests or meet my friends. I also like to have sleepovers with my friends. Then we watch movies, talk and laugh together and eat sweets and fruit.

In my freetime I like listening to music (Mostly chart-hits, but I also like acapella and rock.), meeting my friends and going to the city, the cinema or the gym with them. Also I like reading books (I love Fantasy and Action novels.) and baking cakes or cupcakes. Sometimes I read English books too because for me it is interesting to read and learn something at one time. Every Friday I go to a Hip-Hop dance class in Kassel with a friend and I really like to dance there and in my freetime. That’s why, I’d really like to visit a dance class in Canada too. Photography is also one of my hobbies, but I’m not very professional yet.
I’m fond of travelling to other countries and I’ve already been to France, Spain, Netherlands, Italy and England. Unfortunately I’ve never been in America or countries that aren’t in Europe.
It's always interesting for me to get known to other cultures and new people.I'd say I'm an open minded, spontaneous and swinging girl, who's always interested in new things. But sometimes I'm also a bit unconcentrated and a little pessimistic.

I’m a protestant and I’m confirmed too but I don’t go to church constantly (Only 2 or 3 times in the year.) and I don’t agree with all of the Christian’s church opinion.

My wish for my future is having a house, a job, a husband, a pet and children. I don't really have an exact idea what job I want to do in my future but I really like writing and languages so maybe I’ll do something with journalism or communication.

The reason why I really want to do my exchange year in Canada is that I've heard so many positive things about Canada. People say I'm open minded and friendly and that's what I've heard of Canadian people too. I'm very interested in getting known to another culture and to meet new people. It's also a chance to improve my English. It will be a tempting experience to live with another family- your family. You see many things about America in the TV or in movies. I want to see if things we watch there are close to reality. Another reason is attending a real Canadian Highschool. I want to experience the popular school spirit, which is known all over the world. As a girl I'm also looking forward to famous Highschool events like a ball, a performance or a musical. I've seen so many things in TV about these things.
But I'd like to share my culture and lifestyle with you too. Maybe I can cook a German meal for you. I’d also like to tell you something about my life in Germany, about German people, how school works in Germany and so on.
There is so much I’ve already written and so I’m finishing my letter now. I want to thank you again for giving me the chance to spend a half year in Canada, it has always been a big dream for me and although I’m going to miss my family and my friends when I’m with you I’m really looking forward to meet you and your country!

Yours sincerely,
Alicia
